Urethritis is an
inflammation of the urethra

Urethritis is defined as inflammation of the urethra.  In males the urethra is the tube situated inside the penis through which urine and semen pass to the exterior of the body.  Urethritis is when the lining of this tube becomes inflamed.

Although various conditions may lead to irritation and inflammation of the urethra, urethritis is usually reserved to describe urethral inflammation caused by sexually transmitted diseases.  Urethritis is considered as one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in men.

Urethritis affects sexually active people of all ages.  It is most common in the 20-24 year age group.  Urethritis is said to occur in over 4 million Americans (men and women) each year.  It is more prevalent in homosexual and bisexual men.
