Causes of Premature Ejaculation

There is no exact cause of premature ejaculation and most medical professionals agree that it involves a combination of various psychological and biological events.

Various possible psychological and medical/biological causes will be mentioned and discussed.

Psychological causes of premature ejaculation:

Psychological causes: guilty feelings, anxiety and stress

  • Conditioning
  • Some men may have, perhaps unknowingly, conditioned themselves to ejaculate really quickly. If they were often in situations where sex had to be over quickly (to avoid being caught), they taught themselves to ejaculate quickly. This conditioning can be difficult to unlearn even if he is now in situations where sex does not need to be rushed.

  • Relationship conflict
  • Relationship conflict can be a cause of premature ejaculation. Perhaps the man’s partner causes him to feel anxious or guilty which can lead to premature ejaculation.

  • Guilty Feelings
  • Guilty and negative feelings towards sexual act can also cause a man to ejaculate quickly. They feel guilty about having sex so they consciously or subconsciously want the act to be over. The guilty feelings could be related to the sexual act because of a strict religious upbringing or if the man was made to feel guilty about sexual issues since a young age. The guilty feelings could also be related to his partner or the relationship. If he perhaps feels so guilty for cheating on his wife he might develop premature ejaculation because he can’t bare the guilt he feels when he has sex with her.

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Men who have problems with achieving and maintaining an erection might rush to ejaculate because they worry that they might lose their erection. They thus also teach themselves to ejaculate quickly which can be difficult to unlearn. It is very important that the cause of erectile dysfunction is investigated in these cases.

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Men who stress a lot and are anxious in general, tend to suffer more from sexual disorders like premature ejaculation. The anxiety and stress can be made worse when his sexual confidence drops because of premature ejaculation. This may result in sexual avoidance.

Biological causes of premature ejaculation:

Biological causes: abnormal hormone levels and levels of brain chemistry

  • Abnormal hormone levels
  • Levels of the hormone, Prolactin, plays a role in the cause of premature ejaculation. If the premature ejaculation is also combined with erectile dysfunction, testosterone imbalances may also play a part.

  • Abnormal levels of brain chemistry
  • Having an insufficient amount of the neurotransmitter, Serotonin, may play a part in the development of premature ejaculation. It has also been suggested that too much of the neurotransmitter, Dopamine, may also result in premature ejaculation. Careful balances of these neurotransmitters are needed.

  • Heart Disease
  • Heart disease can make a man feel anxious and result in premature ejaculation.

  • Medication
  • Some medication, like the medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease may be a cause of premature ejaculation.

  • Thyroid problems
  • An overactive and underactive thyroid gland can be a cause of premature ejaculation. In a study that was done on men with thyroid problems, 7% of men with an underactive thyroid reported premature ejaculation and 50% of men with an overactive active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) reported to have problems with premature ejaculation. When these men were treated for their thyroid problem, most of their complaints of premature ejaculation also improved.

  • Infection
  • Some sources mention that inflammation and infection of the prostate may possibly be linked to the development of premature ejaculation.

  • Genetic
  • Some sources claim that there might be a genetic component to premature ejaculation which is inherited.

  • Drugs
  • Drugs of abuse like cocaine and amphetamines are linked to premature ejaculation.
