In most cases genital herpes is not a serious medical condition although it may cause painful, irritating or embarrassing symptoms

Complications of genital herpes are relatively rare in people with a healthy immune system. Complications and spread of disease happens when the immune system becomes compromised like in patients with HIV infection, diabetes or cancer.
The following complications may occur:

  • Infection of the spinal cord
  • Herpes may spread to infect the spinal cord. It then causes various types of pain and sensory symptoms.

  • Ocular Herpes
  • Ocular herpes is when herpes infection occurs in the eye. This is a serious infection as there is a possibility that it may lead to blindness.

  • Herpes Encephalitis
  • When the Herpes virus spreads to the brain it is known as Herpes Encephalitis. This is a very dangerous condition which can possibly lead to death.

  • Neonatal Herpes
  • Newborn babies may be infected with Herpes acquired from their mother during pregnancy or during the birth process.

  • Increased risk of other sexually transmitted diseases
  • Having one sexually transmitted disease increases ones chances of contracting another. Although herpes virus is not life threatening (in most cases), it increases ones chance of contracting viruses which can be fatal such as HIV.

In most cases genital herpes is not a serious medical condition although it may cause painful, irritating or embarrassing symptoms. It is always best to have the symptoms of genital herpes checked out by a medical physician and to practice safe sex at all times.
